Within the Interreg Art-IE programme, the AI Robotics Lab collaborated with the Belgian company Araani on an innovative application of artificial intelligence: Video Fire Recognition software. This technology enables cameras to automatically detect smoke and fire — a significant step towards faster fire detection and a safer living environment.

The aim of the project was to optimise the software so that it runs locally on a new type of camera, with minimal energy consumption. Thanks to this application of edge computing, video images are processed directly on the camera, without the intervention of a central server.

What has been realised?

During the project, a working prototype was developed that detects obstacles and converts visual signals into real-time audio feedback. The technology runs on a compact setup with a camera, edge computer, and headset, and operates independently of ground markings.

The collaboration between Avans University of Applied Sciences, Breda Robotics, Fontys University of Applied Sciences, HOWEST, Odisee, and VIVES yielded valuable insights into AI, edge computing, and accessibility.

What will still be developed in the future

The next step is to further refine the software for even faster and more reliable detection, even under challenging conditions such as smoke development or changing light conditions. In addition, work is being done on user testing and integration into existing safety systems, with a view to broader deployability in public and industrial environments.
