Project information 

The aim of this project is to realise a prototype agrobot for pixelfarming. In current agriculture, monoculture is often practised, where a single type of crop is harvested. The future vision is focused on transforming this into a pixel culture, where different crops are harvested interspersed. This promotes biodiversity, as crops mutually stimulate each other's growth. As a result, diseases are transmitted less quickly between crops, leading to reduced pesticide use by farmers. 

What has been realised?

 

In this project, an existing robot was analysed, after which various improvements were made. The robot can now harvest crops and sort them into the correct bins, even on uneven terrain. This is made possible by various systems, such as vision, artificial intelligence, and image recognition. Furthermore, the robot can position itself in an area thanks to a navigation system. The project forms a good foundation for further development in the coming years. 

What have they learned? 

The project members learned a great deal from each other's insights, as the team was multidisciplinarily composed of students from mechatronics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. This diversity contributed to an enjoyable and convivial collaboration. In addition, the project members gained a lot of knowledge about the manufacturability and assemblability of products. One project member specifically delved into artificial intelligence, with a specialisation in vision, from which the other project members were also able to learn a lot.
