This project focuses on the evaluation and optimisation of the Odd.Bot weeding robot for weed management in carrot and onion cultivation, with a particular focus on the Netherlands and Belgium. It includes the evaluation of the Odd.Bot weeding robot during different growth stages of carrots, with special attention paid to growth stages BBCH 11 and 12.

Purpose

The main objective is to gain insight into the method and quality of the weeding process, by comparing automated and manual weeding. It will also be investigated whether early-stage weeding can reduce weed pressure later in the season, with a possible addition of a mechanical weeding module for later growth stages. This also includes robustness measurements of the Odd.Bot weeding robot. In another work package, the Odd.Bot weeding robot will be tested in onion cultivation during various early growth stages. This work package includes various activities in collaboration with knowledge institutions such as Avans University of Applied Sciences, Vives, ILVO, and Flanders Make, including the development of a universal interface for weeding modules, NIR detection for onions, measurements of weeding performance for carrots, preparatory activities for the market introduction of the Odd.Bot robot, and robustness measurements under different conditions.

Solution

The ultimate goal is to enable a thorough assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of the Odd.Bot weeding robot compared to manual methods, with a view to broader applicability across different growth stages of root and onion cultivation. This evaluation will provide valuable insights for further optimisation of the weeding process and the potential market introduction of the robot.
