Project information
The WasteShark project focuses on deploying smart robotics to keep the canals of Breda clean. The WasteShark is an autonomous water drone that collects floating waste, operating both independently and remotely. Thanks to its compact design, it can also reach hard-to-access places, such as canal banks under low bridges. The deployment of the WasteShark is not only a practical solution for litter but also a powerful symbol of how technology can visibly and positively contribute to a liveable city. By showcasing robotics in public spaces, innovation becomes tangible for residents and visitors of Breda.


What has been realised?
Besides keeping the water clean, the WasteShark also plays a role in education and innovation. Students and researchers from local educational institutions are actively involved in analysing data, improving the technology, and developing new applications. In this way, the WasteShark grows along with the knowledge and creativity of young talent, and contributes to retaining that talent within the region. Thus, the WasteShark is not just a cleaning robot, but also a catalyst for collaboration between government, education, and technology companies.
Project partners
The project is a collaboration between several partners. The municipality of Breda is the initiator and is making the canals available as a test environment. RanMarine Technology is the developer of the WasteShark and provides technical support. Breda Robotics coordinates the project within the New Technology innovation programme and ensures the connection with education and communication. Avans University of Applied Sciences and Curio provide students and researchers who contribute to the further development of the technology. In addition, Rabobank is involved as a sponsor and communication partner.
