Within the Interreg Art-IE programme, EMVI.AI, together with VIVES, Breda Robotics and Avans, has developed an innovative mobility aid: the AI-Guard. This virtual shield helps blind and visually impaired people to navigate independently and safely, thanks to obstacle detection with LIDAR and real-time audio feedback via AI.
The system has been designed to be accessible, compact, and reliable, marking a significant step towards inclusive technology and independent mobility.
What has been realised?
During the project, a compact prototype was developed, consisting of a camera, an edge computer (NVIDIA Jetson Nano), and a Bluetooth headset. The technology detects obstacles, keeps the user on the path, and works independently of ground markings.
The collaboration between the partners went smoothly and yielded valuable insights into AI, edge computing, and accessibility. The prototype demonstrates that smart technologies can effectively contribute to independent mobility for visually impaired people.

What will still be developed in the future
Based on the initial results, EMVI.AI is focusing on further optimisation of the algorithms, improving the user experience, and expanding functionalities. User testing is planned to refine the system and prepare it for market launch.
In addition, consideration is being given to how the system can be integrated into existing mobility solutions and how it can be deployed more widely in different environments — from urban areas to public buildings.
